Referred to as “The River City,” San Angelo houses different historic sites like Fort Concho, Goodfellow Air Force Base and Angelo Civic Theater, which is the oldest civic theater in Texas.

The city’s economy grew significantly during the 1900s upon the discovery of oil in the area. The city became a regional hub of the oil and gas industry along with its strong economic sectors in defense and telecommunications.

The city is home to Angelo State University and houses a branch of Howard College, which is based in Big Spring, Texas.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts hosts the National Ceramic Competition and brings in thousands of visitors to the city annually. It is known as a world-class museum that received the prestigious National Museum Service Award. It preserves various cultural treasures:

The complex, managed by the city’s Recreation Division, is responsible for organizing senior services, athletics, an aquatic program, summer day camps and special events such as the annual Date Night.
